Grocery Stores and Senior Shopping!

Friends, we are all learning about how to get our groceries and food. Most of us have not ordered our groceries for pick-up or delivery before, so navigating the different methods used by stores and finding open time slots have been challenging tasks. Below are just a few tips. We start with what neighbor Liisa Ogburn wrote for WRAL last week about hours for senior shopping, and we have added pick-up and delivery. If you want to share information from your experience, please email raleighvillageeast@gmail.com

Also, if you would like help by phone to navigate some of these websites, please send an email to raleighvillageeast@gmail.com

WRAL’s “Aging Well” by Liisa Ogburn

The primary outing that seniors make these days, that risks exposure-- is to get groceries. Fortunately, more stores are now providing “seniors-only” hours. These are typically early in the morning right after the store has been cleaned and restocked, but before the general public is allowed in.

  • Fresh Market 8 a.m. to 9 a.m., Monday-Friday, is designated for ‘seniors and other individuals most at risk (chronic health conditions such as heart disease or diabetes).’

  • Harris Teeter Mondays and Thursdays from 6 a.m. to 7 a.m. are reserved for seniors ages 60+ Also, ExpressLane Online Shopping pick-up times from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Thursday will be reserved for seniors, and Harris Teeter will waive the $4.95 fee and offer $5 delivery for seniors during this time.

  • Trader Joe's every day from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. there will be an additional line outside the front door for senior customers to ‘ensure that those customers will have an expedited entrance to the store to help make their experience a more positive one.

  • Walmart From 3/24/2020 to 4/28/2020, every Tuesday, ages 60 and older can shop one hour before stores open (6 a.m. to 7 a.m. for most stores). Pharmacies and Vision Centers will be open during this time.

  • Whole Foods. The first hour of operation is designated for ‘seniors age 60 and older.’

Grocery Pick-up:

To Liisa’s list of stores with early openings, we have added the following on Pick-ups:

The following stores offer the opportunity to shop on-line and then select a pick-up time. Pick-up is outside the door. The difficult thing is finding a free pick-up time, so where we know about how to get pick-up times, we have added that: (If you find on-lining shopping frustrating but think you could do it with a little help by phone, please send an email to raleighvillageeast@gmail.com and we will get you that help.)

  • Weaver Street Market ( https://www.weaverstreetmarket.coop/shop-online/ ). Go online and order. Then select a pick-up time—usually they have a time the next day or the following. For seniors the pick-up fee of $5 is waived, but you have to enter the word SENIOR in the code line . You will be given a number to display in your window so that they can identify your order. They bring the groceries to your car, put in trunk, and do not accept tips.

  • Walmart. (https://www.walmart.com/store/2058/raleigh-nc )DELIVERY OR PICKUP. Note: Walmart is offering 2 weeks of free delivery if you want to try that. Go to the website (nearest is New Hope Road store), select your store, create an account, select a pick-up or delivery time (early morning usually offers more new times) and then start adding things to your cart. If the item you want does not pop up under the category you selected, try entering the name in the Search box—there are many more items available than show up when you just select a category. Orders over $35 have free pickup. Between the time you order and about 10 hours before the pick-up you can add or delete items from your cart. When you go to pick-up, there will be clearly marked pick-up places to park and the phone number to call to get the groceries brought out to you is right in front of you. Bags are put in the trunk and you can tip if you choose.

  • Wegmans, Harris Teeter, and Food Lion use a service, either Shipt or InstaCart. It is still hard to find pick-up or delivery times at these stores, but that may change. You can get a slot about a week out at Harris Teeter (and the senior discount code works on most of these pick-ups, so they are free—you will find the code on the pick-up page). The limitation of Harris Teeter is that you cannot add to your order once it is placed.
