Lee (Mama) Wachtstetter, 89, has been living on a cruise ship full-time after she was stuck in a big, empty house after her husband passed away. Instead of moving to an assisted living facility, she decided to sell the house and start cruising full-time.
Mama Lee estimates living the good life at sea costs her $164,000 a year. That will cover costs of her single-occupancy stateroom, regular and specialty restaurant meals, gratuities, nightly ballroom dancing, and Broadway-caliber entertainment — as well as the captain's frequent cocktail parties, movies, lectures, plus other scheduled daily activities.
Raleigh Village East (RVE) is a new aging in place village in downtown Raleigh that will cater to the seasick landlubber in you who wants to stay in your own home as you get older.
Compare that with assisted living facilities. RVE has been told that assisted care ranges from $5K to $12K a month ($60K to $144K a year). Lower level independent living costs $2,500 to $4,500 a month ($30K to $54K a year).
All of this is fine if this is where you want to live and you have planned and saved for it. But what if you are a Granny Clampett and just want to stay put? We hope that is where we will come in.
Raleigh Village East (RVE) will eventually provide enough in-home medical and non-medical services (medical will be referrals) and social, educational and physical activities to allow you to age in your own community surrounded by your family and friends.
